Oxbridge
British composite Oxbridge...
Welcome to Oxbridge! Dreaming spires, mellow punts, leafy willows and aspiring academia... Could we be any more British? We somehow doubt it. Here’s what we found out about both great old cities.
Faactbox: Oxford
Alice Liddell, the real Alice in Wonderland, lived at Christ Church where her father was Dean. Lewis Carroll was the pseudonym for Charles Dodgson, a Mathematics don and amateur photographer. His camera is in the Museum of History of Science. n Other Oxford literary greats include C.S Lewis Oscar Wilde, T.E Lawrence, Evelyn Waugh, J.R.R Tolkien, Kenneth Grahame and P.D James.
Another great mind who studied at Oxford was Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the man who invented the World Wide Web and consequently changed the way we live. n Chances are you know much of Oxford already... Morse, Brideshead Revisited, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Golden Compass, X-Men 4 and of course Harry Potter have all been filmed here. n Oxford is also home to the world’s first public museum. Ashmolean Museum is still open today and home to many great collections. And if you’re talking museums then there’s none more fascinating than the Pitt Rivers collection of archaeological and ethnographic objects! n In 1954 the city was home to Roger Bannister’s legendary four minute mile. He completed it at the Oxford University running track on Iffley Road. It’s now known as the Roger Bannister running track of course...
When it comes to sports, there’s only one main attraction: The World Pooh Sticks Championships are held annually just outside the city in Day’s Lock, Little Wittenham. All the fun is in aid of RNLI and the next one is in March.
